Test shoots is where almost everyone in the fashion industry begins. Photographers, models, stylists, make up artists and hair stylists, etc… pretty much everyone starts there.

But what exactly are these and why are they so important? As usual in this industry, there are several takes on the subject and, as usual on this blog, what follows are my own thoughts about it.

WHAT IS A TEST SHOOT?

(Surprise, surprise) it’s a photoshoot done with the intent of testing something. Maybe it’s the photographer who wants to test some gear, maybe the photographer or the model (or both) need some photos to update their portfolio.

As referred on the beginning, it’s very common for anyone starting in this industry to do test shoots exactly because they are starting and therefore, they need to gain some experience. And as with many things in life, the best way to learn and improve, is to test and learn from the results.

WHEN TO BOOK ONE?

I would recommend doing it when you have some goal in mind.

If you’re a photographer who’s shooting seriously and for real, you don’t want to shoot someone just because he/she is pretty, right? So, set the goals and book a test shoot accordingly. Your goals can be anything from testing gear, to practicing or updating/developing portfolio. Just make sure to inform the model or the agency of what that is, before you book the shooting.

If you’re a model, it’s pretty much the same. You may need new pictures to update your portfolio. Or you may need a specific type of photos which are missing on your portfolio. Or maybe you are just starting out and need to practice. Whatever that is, make sure to talk with the photographer or your agency before booking.

And the same thing applies to stylists, make up artists and other professionals. Talk before booking and make sure you’re all on the same page.

HOW TO MAKE ONE?

The answer seems obvious… book it! But first, I would go back to the goals… it really depends on what you are aiming for.

For instance, test shoots are done for model agencies all the time and they usually prefer clean and simple images. The agencies' goal is to have images that will allow them to promote the model’s look. So, if you start testing some crazy lights, or decide to go for some heavy make up, chances are, the images will be useless for the agency and the model. So, keep things simple, don’t overcomplicate and don’t overdo, being with light, clothes, make up or hair.

When you are starting out, the most common mistake, is that people are eager to test anything and that’s fine. But, once again, make sure you have in mind the reason why you are shooting and that everyone’s on board with that.

HOW TO APPROACH A PROFESSIONAL FOR A TEST SHOOT?

Wether you’re a model, a photographer, a stylist, a make up artist, hair stylist, producer… the same rule applies: use some common sense when approaching a professional.

A professional is called a professional, usually because that’s what they do for a living. In other words, they aren't doing this has a hobby. So, if you don’t have a budget to hire a professional, you should consider what is it that you have to offer, that will convince that professional to put some of his/her time and experience at your disposal. I’m not saying it’s not possible to have a professional working with you for free. But, you will gain his/her attention much easier if you know you have something to offer, like an amazing idea for a shooting, for example. Or, access to a wonderful location or to some rad clothes.

If you don’t have a budget or anything to offer in return, don’t despair. There are a lot of people starting out who, just like you, are willing to test. Just look for them and build your portfolio from there. And when you have developed your skills or booked a few jobs, you will then be able to hire some professionals to work with you.

WHY ARE TEST SHOOTS IMPORTANT?

Those who have worked with me, know how important I think testshoots are. It’s just the best way to practice and learn. You are testing, so it’s expected that mistakes might happen and for those with less experience, this is the best you can get. The pressure/expectations are low, so you can make the best of it.

And even if you’re a more experienced professional, testshoots are still important, because you can still use them to test ideas or try different approaches to photography. It’s probably the best way to improve your skills, wether you are a model, a photographer, a stylist, a producer, a make up artist or hair stylist.

Os test shoots são, normalmente, o ponto de partida para muitas pessoas na indústria da moda. Fotógrafos, modelos, maquilhadoras, cabeleireiros, etc… quase todos começam por aqui.

Mas o que são exactamente e porque são tão importantes? Como de costume, nesta indústria, existem diferentes opiniões sobre o assunto, mas como de costume neste blog, o que se segue são as minhas opiniões e a minha visão.

O QUE É UM TEST SHOOT?

(Surpresa, surpresa...) é uma sessão fotográfica feita com o intuito de se testar algo. Pode ser o fotógrafo que quer testar algo, ou a modelo (ou ambos) que precisam de material para actualizar o portfolio.

Como referi no início, é o ponto de partida de muitas pessoas nesta indústria e como tal, é normalmente o tipo de sessão indicada para ganhar experiência. E, tal como em muitas coisas na vida, a melhor forma de aprender e de melhorar, é testar e aprender com os resultados.

QUANDO MARCAR UM TEST SHOOT?

Eu diria para o fazerem quando tiverem algo específico em mente.

Se és um/a fotógrafo/a sério e profissional, certamente que não estarás interessado em fotografar alguém, só porque ele/ela é bonito/a, certo? Então, define o objectivo dessa sessão e depois marca-a de acordo com isso. Os objectivos podem ser vários, desde testar equipamento novo, a actualizar portfolio. Certifica-te apenas de informar a modelo ou a agência do que se trata, para evitar surpresas.

Se és um/a modelo, a lógica é a mesma. Podes precisar de material para actualizar o teu portfolio ou redes sociais. Ou podes precisar de imagens específicas que faltam no teu portfolio. Ou podes até estar a começar ou vir de uma longa pausa e precisares de praticar. Qualquer que seja o motivo, fala primeiro com o fotógrafo ou com a tua agência, antes de agendares a sessão.

E o mesmo se aplica a stylists, maquilhadores ou outros profissionais da área. Conversem antes de agendar a sessão, para garantir de que estão todos alinhados sobre o que querem.

COMO FAZER UM TEST SHOOT?

A resposta óbvia seria… marquem/agendem! Mas antes disso, voltaria à questão dos objectivos, porque a forma como o testshoot se vai desenrolar, pode depender dos objectivos que tenhas em mente.

Por exemplo, os test shoots são feitos regularmente para agências de modelos e normalmente, estas preferem imagens naturais e simples. Sendo o objectivo da agência promover a imagem da/o modelo, se começares a usar luzes que não dominas, ou se escolheres uma maquilhagem super pesada, há a forte probabilidade de saírem imagens que não terão qualquer utilidade nem para a agência nem para a modelo. Por isso, simplifica e não exageres, seja ao nível de iluminação, roupa, maquilhagem ou cabelos.

O erro mais comum, de quem está a começar, é a vontade de testar e experimentar tudo e mais alguma coisa. E atenção, não há nada de errado nisso, desde que todas as partes envolvidas nessa sessão, estejam de acordo com isso.

COMO ABORDAR UM/A PROFISSIONAL PARA UM TEST SHOOT?

Sejas um/a modelo, fotógrafo/a, stylist, produtor/a, maquilhador/a, cabeleireiro/a… há uma regra básica: senso comum.

Quando estamos a falar de profissionais, significa que são pessoas que fazem disso vida. Por outras palavras, é com esse trabalho que pagam as contas no final do mês, pelo que não se trata apenas de um passatempo.

Se não tens orçamento para contratar um profissional, é importante pensares no que tens para lhe oferecer, que o/a possa convencer a colocar o seu tempo e experiência à tua disposição. Não estou a dizer que não é impossível conseguires trabalhar com um profissional de borla. Mas, conseguirás a sua atenção muito mais facilmente, se tiveres algo de interessante para oferecer em troca, como uma ideia fantástica para a sessão, ou acesso a um local brutal que quase ninguém conhece, etc.

Se não te ocorre nada de convincente para oferecer em troca, também não é motivo para desistir. Há muitas pessoas a começar, que tal como tu, também estão interessadas em testar. É uma questão de procurares essas pessoas e desenvolveres o teu portfolio a partir daí. E quando já tiveres um portfólio sólido ou quando já tiveres feito uns quantos trabalhos, já terás então capacidade para chamar profissionais para trabalharem contigo.

PORQUE SÃO OS TEST SHOOTS TÃO IMPORTANTES?

Quem já trabalhou comigo, sabe porque os considero tão importantes e o motivo é simples: são a melhor forma de praticar e aprender. Quando estás a testar, é expectável que possam ocorrer alguns erros e para quem tem menos experiência, isto é o melhor para ti - a pressão e as expectativas são baixas, e assim podes usufruir o melhor possível deste tipo de sessão.

E mesmo para quem já tem alguma experiência, os testshoots continuam a ser importantes, porque é a melhor forma de se desenvolverem ideias ou diferentes abordagens à fotografia. É, muito provavelmente, a melhor forma de dsenvolver as tuas capacidades, sejas tu modelo, fotógrafo, stylist, produtor/a, maquilhador/a, cabeleiro/a, etc
