I would like to be able to say the number of people i've shot during the years, but i don't really know. And i'm not even sure a number would be that relevant.

It were many. And after a while, at least to me, I started to feel the need for something more. It's not like I grew tired of taking photos of people. That's not it, at all! The whole concept of picking an idea from our brains and bring it to existence (digital or physical), to me, is still a process as challenging as wonderful.

So what is that "something more"? To be perfectly honest, i don't have a straight answer.

It means to try new things without straying a far from your own voice, it means to learn to pay attention to things you probably wouldn't, it means to learn to understand your gut and then, to trust it.

And i guess that was kinda the process that led me to Rute Barreto.

I knew her (digitally speaking) for a long time and she was one of those people i had "under my radar". I knew there was something about her, but i didn't quite know how to put it into photos. Until one day i did!

I guess this kind of patience is what older photographers refer to, when they say "Don't just go shooting someone or something just because it's beautiful. Do it because there's a purpose!"

And just as these words come out flowing as if i was on the chat with Rute, so did the photos on the day we finally met.

One of the distinctive things about Rute, is her passion for photography and her willingness to try, experiment and learn.

I know, i know... she's not the only one passioned about photography. There are a lot of people out there with the same passion, the thing is... how do you manage that passion? What are you doing about it?

This girl is working on a store, studying at the university and investing in her modelling passion. All at the same time. How many people can manage all this so well?

Even if you can't relate to this, you gotta at least respect it!

Sure, she is beautiful, but that doesn't mean things are any easier for her. It’s 2021, we’re past the myth that being beautiful is enough, right? Everyone has their own struggles, remember?

Another thing that tells much about her character is that despite her struggles, i didn't listen her complaining about this or that, blaming this person or that one.

She's just doing her thing. Fighting her fights. Studying, working, investing on herself.

And all this takes me back to the beginning - do it because there's a purpose!

The most obvious purpose here would be to make beautiful images (which i believe we did), but the underlying purpose, was to meet and support someone different, a wonderful human being, a professional, a serious and a very talented young woman. Precisely the kind of person i like to work with 🙂

Gostava de dizer quantas pessoas fotografei nestes últimos anos, mas não tenho estado a contar. E nem sei se o número seria tão relevante. Mas foram muitas.

E depois de um tempo, pelo menos para mim, comecei a sentir necessidade de algo mais. Não é como se eu estivesse cansado de fotografar pessoas. Não é nada disso! Todo o conceito de pegar numa ideia das nossas cabeças e torná-la real (digital ou física), para mim, continua a ser um processo tão desafiante quanto maravilhoso.

Então, o que é esse "algo mais"? Para ser totalmente honesto, não tenho uma resposta directa.

Significa tentar coisas novas sem nos afastarmos muito da nossa própria voz, significa aprender a prestar atenção a coisas a que provavelmente não ligaríamos, significa aprender a ouvir o nosso instinto e, depois, a confiar nele.

E acho que foi esse tipo de processo que me levou à Rute Barreto.

Conhecia-a (digitalmente falando) há muito tempo e ela era uma daquelas pessoas que eu tinha "sob o meu radar". Eu sabia que havia algo nela, mas não sabia muito bem como colocar isso em fotos. Até que um dia soube!

Acho que este tipo de paciência é aquilo a que os fotógrafos mais velhos se referem, quando dizem "Não vás fotografar alguém ou algo só porque é bonito. Vai porque há um propósito/objectivo!"

E assim como essas palavras saem fluindo como se eu estivesse no chat com Rute, o mesmo aconteceu com as fotos no dia em que finalmente nos conhecemos (pessoalmente).

Uma das características distintas de Rute, é sua paixão pela fotografia e sua vontade de experimentar e aprender.

Eu sei, eu sei... ela não é a única apaixonada por fotografia. Há muitas pessoas por aí com a mesma paixão, a questão é... como é que elas gerem essa paixão? O que fazem por ela?

A Rute trabalha numa loja, estuda na universidade e ao mesmo tempo, está também a investir na sua paixão como modelo. Tudo ao mesmo tempo. Quantas pessoas estão dispostas a fazer o esforço para gerir tudo isto?

Mesmo que não se identifiquem com isto, acho que pelo menos, têm de respeitar!

Claro, ela é muito bonita, mas isto não significa que as coisas sejam mais fáceis para ela. Estamos em 2021, já todos sabemos que ser bonito por si só, não chega. Já ultrapassámos esse mito, certo? Toda a gente tem suas próprias lutas, correcto?

Outra coisa que diz muito sobre a personalidade da Rute é o facto de que, apesar de suas próprias lutas internas, não a ouvi reclamar disto ou daquilo, não a ouvi culpar esta ou aquela pessoa.

Ela está apenas a fazer as suas coisas. A lutar as suas lutas. A estudar, a trabalhar, a investir em si mesma.

E tudo isto me leva de volta ao início - façam o que fizerem, façam-no porque há um propósito!

O propósito mais óbvio aqui seria fazer imagens bonitas (que acredito que fizemos), mas o propósito subjacente, era conhecer e apoiar alguém diferente, um ser humano maravilhoso, uma profissional, uma jovem séria e muito talentosa. Precisamente o tipo de pessoa com quem gosto de trabalhar 🙂
