Maryana T. @ Just Models
On her phone, trying to find us on the bus station, we spotted her before she could even start talking. Knowing she was rushing out of a school presentation, we started talking about how young girls have to juggle between school and modeling to make it in this business. Maryana is both a happy and wise seventeen beauty, with no regrets for the busy life she chose for herself.
Where are you originally from and how long have you been living in Portugal?
I was born in Ukraine and came to Portugal at the age of 6, which means I’ve been here for about 11 years.
How did you get started in fashion?
It was pretty random, it never crossed my mind to get into fashion. I was approached on the street by a team of scouters who enquired me about my height (i was 1,70m at the time). After that I signed with Just Models, I started modeling and my passion for fashion has been growing since then, as well as my height… i’m now 1,77m :)
What do you like the most in fashion?
Runways! I like all the mess and energy that goes on the backstage. The crazy and chaotic environment of the moments right before stepping into the catwalk, are definitely my favorite moments in fashion.
Although you are still recent in the fashion business, you have already done several campaigns, editorials, did the most important runway shows in Portugal… what has been your favorite moment, so far?
It was my first runway show for HIBU, at Portugal Fashion. I was very nervous because I had never done anything similar and I was very young, which didn’t help with all the anxiety. But as soon as I got out of the backstage, I felt like I was on the top of the world. It was a really thrilling experience.
From what you’ve learned so far, what would be the best tip for someone who wants to be a professional model?
Train facial expressions! I feel that’s where I’m struggling the most, so, I would say that’s a good starting point.
Who's your favorite designer?
It’s hard to choose between so many great designers… but if I had to pick one, it would be Diogo Miranda.
What are your hobbies?
I love running! It makes me feel free and it’s great to relax, to be alone and think, while enjoying the beautiful sights of Cascais.
As a model, what’s your dream?
I think every model wants to be a Victoria’s Secret Angel and I’m no exception :)
