Being bold, prepared and practical

I have been using this blog sometimes to share stories of models and sometimes to share my experience shooting them, but always, with the intent of passing some useful info to you. Being through these models' experience or the character traits that set them apart, I hope I can bring you something useful and inspiring, with these posts.

Although this shot was done earlier this year, I still had to write about it. First of all, because Lulu is one of those people that just doesn’t go unnoticed (from a photography standpoint). She has latin blood running all over those veins and you can easily understand that right from the first click. And second of all, because from the brief time we spent doing this shooting, I noticed three important things that I thought I should reinforce to models out there: be bold, be prepared and be practical.

Being bold. If you check Lulu’s Instagram, you can see that until a couple months ago, she had a dark, beautiful, straight hair. She is a beautiful girl, but her features were quite similar to other models, specially in the latin market. Realising that, she decided to change. I know changing hair style can be daunting to many models, but sometimes, that can really boost your overall image. Now, I’m not saying you should go change your hair, what I’m saying is, don’t be afraid to make changes! And when you make them, make sure you are in the hands of the right professionals.

Be prepared. If you change your look, that means you need new material to promote your new image, right? And are you just going to knock on every photographers’ door? For your sake, let’s hope not. Knowing that and being travelling around, while in Portugal, Lulu already knew which photographers to contact, thanks to her previous homework (and thank you Toni for the referral!). 

Be practical. And be objective. We managed to find an afternoon in which we were both available, but only for a few hours, so time was of essence. When Lulu arrived, she already had a few things in her mind that she wanted to try. She had the outfits planned, so we used all the available time we had, the best way we could: clicking!

And it was a pity that we didn’t have more time, because with this girl’s energy and her crazy curls, we could have easily kept shooting all night long 😃

Tenho usado este blog para, umas vezes partilhar histórias de modelos e outras vezes, para partilhar a minha experiência ao fotografá-las. E tenho-o feito sempre com a intenção de passar informação que vos possa ser útil, seja através da experiência delas ou daquelas traços de personalidade, que as distinguem das demais, na expectativa de que, de alguma forma, vos possa inspirar.

Apesar desta sessão ter ocorrido no início do ano, tinha de escrever sobre ela. Primeiro, porque a Lulu é uma daquelas pessoas que não passa despercebida (fotograficamente falando). Desde o primeiro click, dá para perceber que há sangue latino em todas aquelas veias. E segundo, porque do curto tempo que passámos juntos, apercebi-me de 3 aspectos importantes, que me pareceu oportuno reforçar aqui, para as modelos que estejam a ler isto: sejam audazes, estejam preparadas e sejam práticas.

Audazes. Se forem ver o Instagram da Lulu, podem ver que até há pouco mais de 2 meses atrás, ela tinha cabelo comprido e liso, muito comum nas raparigas sul americanas. Que ela é uma rapariga muito bonita, não há grandes dúvidas, mas a verdade é que não tinha assim traços que a distinguissem claramente das restantes modelos do mesmo mercado (latino). Tendo noção disso, ela decidiu mudar. Eu sei que mudar de corte de cabelo é um tema sensível para muitas mulheres, nomeadamente modelos, mas a verdade é que esta mudança deu uma boost novo à imagem dela. Atenção, não estou a dizer que devem ir mudar de corte de cabelo, o exemplo a observar aqui, é o de não ter medo de arriscar fazer mudanças. E quando o decidirem fazer, certifiquem-se de que são acompanhadas por profissionais habilitados/as.

Estejam preparadas. Quando há uma mudança de look, normalmente significa que vão precisar de material novo para promover essa mudança, certo? E, por princípio, não irão a correr bater à porta de todos os fotógrafos... Sabendo disso e andando a viajar regularmente, quando passou por Portugal, a Lulu já tinha o trabalho de casa feito e sabia que fotógrafos deveria contactar (já agora, obrigado Toni pela referência!).

Sejam práticas. E objectivas. Com agendas nem sempre compatíveis, lá conseguimos encontrar uma tarde em que ambos tínhamos pouco mais do que 3 horas disponíveis. Quando a Lulu chegou, já tinha uma ideia daquilo que queria. Trazia os coordenados que queria vestir preparados, permitindo-nos assim aproveitar o tempo que tínhamos da melhor forma: a clicar!

Foi uma pena não termos tido mais tempo, porque com a energia dela e e aqueles caracóis loucos, teríamos continuado a fotografar noite dentro, na boa 😃
